Part D Medicare was enacted as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003. It is a federal program to help with the cost of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. This means that for the first time in history everyone with Medicare will have access to prescription drug coverage.
There really are only four steps to the Medicare application for Part D coverage. The first is whether or not you want to get the coverage in the first place. It is not mandatory, what it really depends on is how you pay for your prescription drugs. If you have a plan from a former employer who that pays 100% or you only pay a few dollars for a prescription, you very well might be better off sticking with that.
The second question to ask yourself when considering Medicare application for Part D prescription drugs. You have to decide what type of prescription drug coverage you would like. There are several options available so you can focus on the kind of coverage you think you will prefer. There are two ways you can get your Medicare drug coverage. Medicare allows you to add drug coverage through a standalone drug plan or you can get drug coverage along with your other benefits from Medicare.
Next, you have to choose a prescription drug plan. There are many ways to do this. You can talk to your friends and family to get advice and you can use the Landscape of Local Plans. This resource is available on line and has information to help you decide on a plan for you drug coverage. If you want to be more specific and compare two plans head to head, you can get more information from the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder. Both of these are available at the government's Medicare website or you can call and request to have them send you a paper copy. That number is 1-800-MEDICARE. Help is also available in the form of the Patient Advocate Foundation. They have case managers who will answer any questions you have and will assist you in the Medicare application for part D itself.
